SysADF_CM02: Extend Ontology Elements for new System Type

A new system type may require unique ontology elements to enable stakeholder engagement and understanding. Extending ontology elements provides a way to inherit an ontology element properties and then tailor the new ontology elements for the new conceptual model.

NOTE: from a model perspective, this is a way to keep the original definition of the ontology element in the original conceptual model simple inheritable in the original sense of the ontology element.

Specific ontology element extension to a new conceptual model is carried out using the following steps:

• Identify the ontology elements in a conceptual model to extend

• Create a model with the ontology elements to extend (from the original conceptual model).

• Create new ontology elements for the new conceptual model

• Generalize these to the appropriate ontology elements from the original conceptual model.

• Add any additional connections

• Review the extension and finalize.
